OVER EIGHTY cars competing in nine classes par-ticipated in the second annual “Giant’s Despair”Hillclimb in Wilkes Barre, Pa. The old record of lastyear, established by Del Lee in an Allard was smashedthis year by Phil Walters driving the new Cunning-ham CR-4K (coupe). His time for the ascent was aquick 1 minute 2.3 seconds. Second best time of theday was established by Sherwood Johnston whosemuch-modified Jaguar XK-120 covered the one mileuphill distance in 1 minute 9.1 seconds.Through the splendid cooperation of Senator Woodsof Pennsylvania, the members of the Sports Car Clubof America and invited participants were able to runa road race over an interesting circuit on the Senator’svast estate. Twenty-five amateur radio operators keptall officials and flagmen fully informed on all activityat every point of the tricky course. Mobile units tour-ed the course between events and no effort was sparedto insure the greatest degree of protection for thevisiting public. The critical points along the 3.3 milecourse were manned by no less than twenty-five vol-unteer flagmen, everyone of whom had the publicsafety in mind.The feature event of the day, a ten-lap race, (ap-proximately 33 miles) was won by Phil Walters at thewheel of a German 1.5 Itr. Porsche. Second place manin this event was John G. Benett (MG-MkII super-charged) . Bill Lloyd in the Offy-powered MG came inthird.THE ENDJ. G.
