  • This very nice B&H center draft has a Japanned finish. No wick but riser works very well. I had a lamp it suited perfectly, but a customer wanted the lamp only. So here it is, this wonderful center draft offered on . I realize it's not going to be every ones cup of kerosene.
  • The Font has dents please look closely at photos 10, 11, and 12.
  • It has a Penfield patent wick riser, see last 2 photos (not a simple riser to install a wick just in case you are not familiar with center draft oil lamps). The high dome font and burner can be seen on page 86 of J.W. Couter's Center Draft Kerosene Lamp Books 1884-1940, pictured in the B&H embossed stand lamp No.1
  • The word/definition "Japanning"is a type of finish that originated as aEuropeanimitation ofEast Asian lacquer work. It was first used onfurniture, but was later much used on small items in metal. The word originated in the 17th century. American work, with the exception of the carriage and early automobile industries, is more often calledtoleware.
    • It is a durable and beautiful finish if done correctly. Japanning is a 17th century metal and iron rust proofing/finishing method first adopted in Western Europe around 1620 or so, and latter brought to the US around 1815.
  • Japanning recipes were well-kept manufacturers’ secrets. Some 1800’s erametaljapanning mixtures from Pontypool, England call for burnt umber, litharge, and cobalt resinate in addition to the more well-known ingredients of asphaltum and turpentine. The finish could have been brushed on or dipped.
