Charleston, SC, was North America’s largest Transatlantic Slave Trade port of entry. Nearly 150,000 kidnapped Africans, more than 40 percent of all enslaved Africans trafficked to North America, arrived in Charleston Harbor. Those who survived could spend weeks or even months confined aboard ships in the port awaiting sale. Enslaved people were forced to perform treacherous work on rice plantations. Rice plantations helped to make Charleston and its economy one of the richest cities in the world, but the wealth was primarily built on slave labor.
A short but interesting letter that speaks directly to the slavery aspect of Rice Plantation. 8 x 10, one-page ALS, Charleston, [SC], Feb’y, 18th, 1832, appears to be J. Hamilton Jr. writes to “Doctor” informing him of sending Negro workers. “I have sent a small gang of Negroes...22...to live at Dr. Daniels Place...back of Rice Hope. I wish you to attend them when sick & have advised by the enclosed letter [to] Mr. Evans (not present) that he [take] the really sick to my hospital until a better arrangement can be made.
“I will thank you to let Mr. Evans have this letter as early on Monday morning”
Red Charleston postmark with manuscript postage and a note that the letter contained a second letter within. Toning, folds, seal tear.
