Limoges Elite Bawo Dotter 12" X 8" Dresser Tray & 3 Jars w/Lids Roses Gold 1900 Limoges Elite Bawo Dotter 12" X 8" Dresser Tray & 3 Jars w/Lids Roses Gold 1900 Elegant Decorative Hand Painted DRESSER Set TRAY 12" by 8", 3 JARS w/LIDS from ELITE WORKS (Bawo & Dotter) Limoges, France, Sprays of CABBAGE ROSES & GREEN LEAVES, Scalloped, Embossed & BEADED Rim, circa 1900

DESCRIPTION:  The absolutely beautiful decorative tray was  manufactured, designed, and decorated in the Elite Works Studio.  The designer of the decoration was most talented.  The overall quality of the design is quite professional.  The sprays consist of pink, white & yellow cabbage roses with their green leaves.  The rims of all pieces are scalloped, embossed and beaded.  The gold starts solid on the edge and ends brushed.CONDITION:  While this decorative dresser tray is classified as used, its condition is superb.  The only issue is a small flake on the top rim of the smaller jar.  This is covered by the lid.  See photo #17.  Otherwise there is very slight age appropriate wear to the gold on the rims.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, other flakes, crazing or hairlines.  See the photos.

DIMENSIONS:  The tray is 10 5/8" by 7 1/2" with a height of 3/8". HISTORY/MARKS:  In the 1860’s, Bawo & Dotter was established in New York City for the purpose of importing china, especially Limoges porcelain.  The firm established its own decorating studio in Limoges, France in the early 1870’s named The Elite Works.  Bawo & Dotter began manufacturing its own china in 1896 in Limoges.  The green mark on this set is the underglaze white ware mark #5 (Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition by Mary Frank Gaston) which was used 1900-1932.  In addition, an overglaze decorating red mark is from The Elite Works and was used as an early decorator's mark for Bawo & Dotter cited as mark #8 used 1891-1900.  The retailer red mark is for "The Van Heusen Charles Co." of Albany, New York.  This makes the circa for this set to be 1900.

Theodore Van Heusen (born 1818) and Daniel D.T. Charles were partners in 1848 dealing in fine china, silverware, glass, earthen ware, kerosene goods, gas fixtures and more in Albany, New York.  Charles Manning Van Heusen joined the business in 1890.  Theodore died in 1893.  An ad shows the business still in operation in 1922.  Charles Manning Van Heusen was head of Van Heusen Charles Co. and died in Albany, New York on February 20, 1931.
