This is a 100% original group of medals, ribbons, patches, photos, documents, and dog tags from World War ll that belonged to Kenneth George Boling in great condition. Kenneth George Boling was born on Christmas Day 1912 (December 25, 1912)in Indianapolis, Indiana to Elmer and Grace Boling. They moved to Elwood, Indiana a suburb of Indianapolis as Elmer was a businessman. Unfortunately, Elmer(Ken’s father) passed away when Ken was only fourteen years old on Aug 26 1926 at the age of 45 from heart failure. Ken attended Greenfield High School and graduated high school in 1931. Upon graduation, he first attended Tusculum College. Then he attended Franklin College in Franklin, IN. Where he joined the Phi Delt fraternity. He was initiated on July 28, 1935. This is where he received his official Fraternity identification card. Ken also attended Hanover College. After graduating college with a degree in geology, he became a geologist for Pure Oil Company in Onley, Illinois. As a geologist, his expertise in studying rock formations helped him identify oil deposits. On September 26, 1942, Kenneth George Boling joined the United States Army from Onley, Illinois. He was assigned to a photographical interpretation course with the US Army Engineers due to his civilian occupation of geology before the war.Upon completion of the course, he was assigned to the 654th Engineer Topographical Battalion. This was a special battalion of map makers and cartographers like Ken that mapped out military operations. Stationed at Camp McCoy, WI he was not only trained to be a regular soldier but also learned how to be technicians and produce maps. Due to his expertise in map making he was promoted to a Technical Sergeant. On May 22, 1943, Kenneth Boling married Corporal Betty Jean Varner of Onley, Illinois who at the time was with the 40th WAAC Company stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. She was the first married from her WAAC unit. After their marriage at the end of Betty’s enlistment period, she left the Woman's Army Auxiliary Corps and moved to Onley, IL. Before leaving overseas for war the Bolings had a daughter named Kay. In December 1943 just months after having a baby Kenneth Boling’s left his family in service to his country with 654th was sent overseas to England in 1943. The 654th arrived in December 1943 with the First Army and began mapping the plans for Operation Overlord. Stationed in Tetbury Gloucestershire, England the 654th made maps and models for US Army landings on Omaha Beach on D-Day(June 6, 1944). At the time Operation Overlord was top secret and the men of the 654th were some of the first to know about the D-Day operations. In the small rural British town, the 654th devised 3D maps of Omaha Beach which became a vital tool used to capture the beach on move inland. After an Allied victory in securing the beaches of Normandy on D-Day thanks to the hard work of the 654th.The 654th and Ken followed the First Army into Europe. Ken and the 654th continued to make maps and models to assist the army in operations. Participating in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe campaigns earning Ken Boling the ETO ribbon with 5 stars. The 654th followed the First Army into Berlin and were vital in the Allied Victory which came in May 1945 and were awarded the Meritorious Service Plaque. The 654th despite not being on the frontlines were recognized for their contribution to the greater war effort. Upon the war's end the 654th was part of the US Army of Occupation in Marburg, Germany which is what Ken revived his occupation medal for. For his service of three years in the army Ken received the Good Conduct medal on June 30, 1945. After the war, Ken applied for a silver star and was awarded one for his service and contribution to the success of Operation Overlord. On July 25, 1945, after three years of service in the United States Army and two years of overseas service with the 654th Topographical Battlefield, Army Engineers, First US Army in Europe Kenneth George Boling (36376864) was discharged at the rank of tech sergeant. Returning to his wife and child in Onley, Illinois he continued his job as a geologist with Pure Oil Company for the next 10 years. His work took him to Saginaw, Michigan where was featured in many newspapers for his opinion on natural oil deposits for drilling. His expertise in map-making he learned from the US Army Engineers would go on to aid him in mapping oil and gases across the Midwest. He later worked for the Defense Mapping Agency in St.Louis, Missouri for 15 years. Ken was an avid bowler and later in his life won many bowling tournaments. Sadly on July 17, 1985, Kenneth George Boling passed away at the age of 72 at Barnes & Jewish Hospital in St.Louis, Missouri. He was buried in Onley, IL at Heaven Hill Cemetery where he entered the Army and sadly a year later after 42 years of marriage Betty Boling passed away as well and was buried next to him. He was survived by his daughter Karen and two grandchildren. As mentioned previously this is an original group of items from the Second World War that shows the true story of an American hero who received the fourth-highest military award for his contribution to the Allied victory in Europe. This lot has a lot of World War ll history from D-Day to the Rhineland this would be the perfect gift for any history buff or an amazing addition to any collection.
