THE CROSS WITH THE BRIEF (OR MOTTO) OF SAINT ANTONYThe short ejaculatory prayer, commonly known as the Brief (or Motto) of Saint Anthony of Padua (Lisbon, 15 August 1195 – Padua, 13 June 1231), according to the testimony of Giovanni Rigaude (13th century) originated from the following prodigy. Steel crucifix with St. Anthony's patentTHE PRODIGYIn Portugal, in the city of Santaren, there lived a poor woman who was heavily harassed by the devil. Because of this harassment, the unfortunate girl often performed inexplicable oddities that made her bizarre even to herself. One day her husband, in a moment of anger, shouted at her that she was possessed. And the poor woman, already in difficulty and carrying the weight of a difficult life, decided to commit suicide by throwing herself into the Tagus river.Determined to carry out her sad purpose, the woman left the house, but as she walked towards the river she came across a Franciscan church in which the solemn celebrations in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua were being celebrated: it was in fact the 13th June, feast day of the Saint.THE PRODIGIOUS PARCHMENT WITH THE MOTTOThe woman then decided to enter the church to offer a final prayer. While she was praying, however, broken by the struggle she was fighting within herself and exhausted by her efforts, she fell asleep and in a dream the Saint appeared to her and said to her: "Get up, oh woman, and guard this prayer that I give you with which you will be free from harassment of the devil." Having woken up abruptly, the woman looked around her and saw a small piece of parchment nearby on which the following words were written next to a sign of the Cross: “Ecce Crucem Dómini, fúgite, partes advérsæ. Vicit Leo de tribu Iuda, Radix David. Alleluia! Alleluia!" (“Behold the Cross of the Lord, flee, enemy powers. The Lion of the tribe of Judah, lineage of David, has won. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”). At that sight the woman clutched her prodigious note to her heart and completely freed from every evil ailment she returned home full of hope. The husband, having learned of the secret, spoke about it everywhere: the news of the prodigious event spread so much that it soon even reached the ears of the King. The latter, intrigued by what had happened, asked to be able to see the miraculous parchment and as soon as he had it in his hands and took possession of it, refusing to return it to its rightful owner.The poor woman, afflicted again, begged the King to give her back to her, but the King would have none of it. The woman then turned to the Franciscans who managed to obtain from the King permission to make a certified copy of that parchment. And what joy when it was discovered that the certified copy possessed the same virtues as the original!
FATHER SISTO V AND THE OBELLISCO OF SAN PIETROWith the addition of the French order, the prayer – namely the Motto (or Brief) of Sant’Antonio – began to spread rapidly, spreading to those who contributed, including Father Sisto V (1585-1590), the French, who were completely absorbed into the base of the obelisk which he had erected in Rome, in the centre of Piazza San Pietro, where it is still visible today.Very special offer
