c1865/70 Rawhide Native American Indian Leather Playing Card Single.

This original hand painted single card has pictograph symbol images of a flag. This symbolic card is hand painted.

As settlers moved in pushing out the Natives, life events and collection of items was intriguing and since the American Indians didn't have paper, they quickly adapted to the playing of cards as gambling was apparent and games like Monte was soon introduced. During battles or life events, intercepted items like artillery, personal belongings or just about anything was collected from there conquered newly owned items. Which then eventually copied like playing cards for entertainment and recreation purposes.

The Native American Symbols and their Meanings were usually based on geometric portrayals of cultural symbols such as the sun, moon and stars, natural phenomena such as thunderstorms and rain and animal designs including eagles, serpents and spiders, weapons , events, sacred animals, ect..
